Learning Objectives
Indicator: K1.3.1.1.2 - Demonstrate that spoken words are represented in written words/print
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Point to each word in a Big Book as the teacher reads aloud, showing that the spoken word matches the written word.
- Give one example of a spoken word (such as “please” or “thank you”) and identify where that word appears in print on a page or chart.
- Contribute at least one keyword from the story to a class-generated story that the teacher writes on a manila card.
- Draw a simple picture to illustrate the class story and tell the teacher what the picture shows.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Using as Big book, model to learners by pointing to each word you read with a pointer. Highlight the awareness that spoken words can be written. Discuss the meaning of the keywords in the text while you read and assist learners give examples of synonyms of some selected keywords. Write the examples the learners give on the board to illustrate the concept. Through LEA, assist the class to create their version of the story read to them using some of the keywords learnt and write it on a manila card for them. Guide learners to illustrate their story.
