Learning Objectives

Indicator: K1.2.2.1.2 - Demonstrate that print matches with illustration in a book.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Point to the illustration on the front cover of a storybook and say what they think the story is about.
  2. Track the text with their finger from left to right as the teacher reads aloud.
  3. Count the number of words in the last sentence of a page and state the number.
  4. Point to a word in the text and find the matching object or action in the illustration.
  5. Compare two sentences and say which one has more words using the phrase “more than”.

Discuss the front matter of the book to be read with the learners. Have learners use the front-page illustration to predict the story. During the reading, have learners track the text as you read. Pause often and let them count the words in the last sentences. Write the number of words in the last sentence of each page on the board. Compare and identify which of the sentences has more words than the other(s).
