Origin and Family History

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: K2.2.2.1.6 - Tell a story and dramatize the history of different families

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Retell a simple family or ethnic origin story they have heard from home in their own words.
  2. Identify the main characters (who) and the key event (what happened) in an origin story.
  3. Use their voice, face and body movements to act out parts of an origin story during dramatization.
  4. Sing at least one traditional song connected to their family or ethnic group during the dramatization.
  5. Work together with classmates in a small group to present a short dramatized origin story to the whole class.

Note: This lesson builds on the learners’ knowledge of their family history from previous weeks (K2.2.2.1.1) and their experience with songs and stories. The focus is on telling and acting out stories, not on reading or measuring, which are covered in other slots.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Invite a resource person to visit the class and tell a story of the origin of different ethnic groups. Learners retell the story about their origin to the
whole class. (Give this as homework to the learners early on so they can prepare). With full traditional costume, learners dramatize the origin story of different tribes. Let learners sing lots of traditional songs during the dramatization.
