SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 3
Object Manipulation in Drawing
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.1 - Use techniques in object manipulation to generate simple designs from natural objects.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Name at least four techniques of object manipulation (such as repetition, rotation, scaling, mirroring, overlapping and distortion) and describe how each changes a natural object.
- Select a natural object from their surroundings and manipulate it freehand using at least two different techniques to produce two distinct simple design motifs.
- Arrange manipulated motifs into a pictorial chart or table that shows, side by side, the original natural object and the design generated from it.
- Explain, in group discussion, how a simple design generated from a natural object could be applied to solve a practical problem in their community.
- Assess their own and peers’ freehand drawings using a simple checklist covering accuracy, proportion and clarity of the manipulation technique used.

Managing Talk for Learning: Learners in mixed groups generate a manual/digital pictorial table/chart of designs and objects created by manipulating natural objects. Experiential Learning: In mixed groups, let learners select and use freehand drawing techniques to imitate designs created by manipulating natural objects. Project-Based Learning: Learners work individually/in groups to create designs from natural objects using freehand drawing and object manipulation techniques. Assessment (3.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - reference books - drawing studio - access to internet - LCD Projector, sketches. - Pencils - Sketch pads - Erasers - Pencil sharpener - Drawing pens or ink - Blending stumps - Charcoal
