SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 5
Object Manipulation in Drawing
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.2 - Experiment with how objects can be manipulated through drawing to achieve new forms.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three different manipulation techniques (stretching, rotating, distorting, combining, fragmenting) that can be applied to an object in drawing.
- Demonstrate the application of at least two manipulation techniques to a simple object (e.g., a bottle, a leaf, a cup) to produce a new form on a sketch pad.
- Compare an original object with its manipulated drawing and verbally explain what changes were made and how the new form was achieved.
- Select an appropriate manipulation technique for a given object based on the new form they wish to achieve, and justify their choice.
- Create a final manipulated drawing of a complex object (e.g., a bicycle, a chair, a human figure) that clearly shows transformation into a new form using one or more techniques.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Activity based learning, Problems-Based Learning: In mixed groups, guide learners to examine photographs, drawings and sketches, videos, real objects, etc. to determine the possible new forms that can be derived from each of the objects. Group work/Collaborative Learning: In small groups, let learners use the available tools and techniques to manipulate simple/complex objects. Activity based learning, Project-Based Learning: Learners work individually to use the available tools and techniques to manipulate selected objects. Assessment (2.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - reference books - drawing studio - access to internet - LCD Projector - sketches. - Pencils - Sketch pads - Erasers - Pencil sharpener - Drawing pens or ink - Blending stumps - Charcoal
