SHS2 Physics · Semester 2, Week 19

Nuclear Physics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.2.LI.1 - State the radioactive decay law

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the radioactive decay law in their own words, both as a statement and as the mathematical expression N = N₀e^(−λt).
  2. Identify and define the terms N (number of undecayed nuclei), N₀ (initial number of nuclei), λ (decay constant), and t (time) in the decay equation.
  3. Explain the meaning of the decay constant (λ) and relate it to the probability of decay of a single nucleus per unit time.
  4. Apply the radioactive decay law to solve simple computational problems involving the decay of a given sample.
  5. Justify why radioactive decay is described as a random and spontaneous process, using evidence from observations.
