Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.5.1.1.1 - Analyse the use of language to convey characters in film/media, narratives and play scripts

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least four ways a writer or filmmaker uses language to reveal character (appearance, actions, speech, and what others say).
  2. Analyse short passages from narratives and play scripts to explain how specific word choices convey a character’s personality or feelings.
  3. Describe how dialogue in a play script or film reveals character traits that narration alone cannot show.
  4. Compare how the same character type can be conveyed differently through the language of appearance versus the language of speech.
  5. Write a short character sketch (8 to 10 sentences) using all four methods of character revelation.
