JHS3 English Language · Term 3, Week 12
Narrative, Drama and Poetry
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.5.1.1.5 - Analyse common themes in texts
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three common themes in a short narrative, film clip or play script and state the theme of each text in one clear sentence.
- Classify themes as universal (such as love, betrayal, hard work) or specific to a culture or time (such as the impact of illegal mining on a community).
- Justify their choice of theme with at least two pieces of textual evidence from the piece studied.
- Compose a short original story or scene around a given theme, adapting the style of a narrative or play script they have studied.
- Present their composition using an ICT tool (such as a slideshow, a word processor or a recorded reading) and respond to peers’ feedback on their work.
This lesson builds directly on the work from Weeks 9 to 11, where learners analysed character, dialogue, sequence and imagery. Today they move from asking “who and what happens” to asking “what is this text really about?”
