Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: K2.3.1.1.3 - Randomly identify letters of the alphabet and recognize them in words and names related to the theme and clap the syllables.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least 5 previously learned letters of the alphabet when the teacher says the letter sound aloud.
- Match a target letter sound to a word that begins with that sound from a group of picture cards.
- Pronounce a given word correctly after picking it from the pile.
- Clap the syllables in a chosen word and say how many claps (syllables) the word has.
- Work cooperatively in a group game to earn marks for their team by following the rules of the game.
Note on positioning: This lesson comes after learners have already discussed personal likes and dislikes (indicator K2.3.1.1.1) and made predictions from the Big Book (indicator K2.3.1.1.2). This lesson focuses on letter recognition and syllable clapping using words related to likes and dislikes, which will prepare them for the next lesson where they write or copy words in a self-dictionary.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Play a game "Listen to the sound, pick the letter and a word in which the letter is and sound it out.". As a way of revising the letters learnt so far, play this game; Put learners in a group and let them win marks for their group. Explain the rules of the game to learners. The rule is: * "Listen to the teacher pronounce a word, find the letter beginning that word in a pile, move to another table and find another word in which the target sound is, pick it, pronounce the word and clap the syllables in the word.". * Use only letter-sound the learners have learnt so far.
