Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.3.3.1.1 - Describe European missionary activities in Ghana

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. List the European missionary societies that came to the Gold Coast in the correct chronological order, starting with the first.
  2. Identify the specific areas in Ghana where each major missionary society operated, such as Basel in Akuapem and Bremen in Peki.
  3. Explain at least three impacts of missionary activities on the lives of Ghanaians, including Christianity, formal education, and the development of local languages.
  4. Discuss other activities missionaries engaged in beyond preaching, such as establishing health facilities, vocational training centres, and translating the Bible into local languages.
  5. Express a reasoned opinion, through debate, on whether missionary activities were beneficial or harmful to Ghanaian society.

1. Identify the missionary societies that came to Ghana (starting from the first to the last)
2. Locate places where they operated (e.g. Basel-Akuapem, Bremen-Peki etc)
3. Discuss Christianity and formal education as some of the major impacts of European presence in Ghana
4. Show and discuss video/documentary of European activities in Ghana
5. Discuss other activities they engaged in (trade, vocational training centres, health facilities, development of alphabets for some local languages and translation of the Bible into local languages)
6. Debate the effects of European activities in Ghana
