Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.2.1.3.8 - Explore and identify the various approaches to improvisation, creating harmony/balance and blocking for dance and drama

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and name at least six parts of the performance space, including the apron, wings, upstage, downstage, stage left and stage right.
  2. Explain the terms masking, aside, apron, linear pattern and circular pattern with reference to specific scenes or movements.
  3. Demonstrate the difference between improvisation that is planned and improvisation that is spontaneous through short group activities.
  4. Describe how harmony and balance are achieved on stage using body levels, spacing and the arrangement of performers and props.
  5. Create a short blocking plan for a two to three minute scene, marking positions and movements on a simple stage diagram.

This lesson builds on the dance drama work from Week 4 (Indicator B9.2.1.3.7) where learners created simple dance dramas. It prepares learners for Week 6 (Indicator B9.2.1.3.9) where they will experiment and practise these techniques in performance.
