Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.1.2.5 - Sing in pitch the diatonic major scale when playing the John Curwen’s Hand Sign Game by Lahing or using solfege

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Sing the C major scale one octave ascending and descending using solfege names (doh, re, mi, fah, soh, lah, ti, doh) with accurate pitch.
  2. Demonstrate the correct John Curwen hand signs for each degree of the diatonic major scale while singing.
  3. Match the seven letter names (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) to their correct positions on the treble clef staff (on a line or in a space).
  4. Play the “Hand Sign Game” in small groups, singing and signing the scale together in time.
  5. Perform a simple song using solfege and hand signs, keeping pitch steady and matching the group.
