Mechanical Drawing
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.1 - Explain the principles of sectional drawing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define sectional drawing and state at least three reasons why sections are used in mechanical drawing.
- Identify and name the key parts of a sectional view, including the cutting plane line, section lining (hatching), and the sectioned and unsectioned areas.
- State and explain the basic rules of sectioning, such as the 45-degree hatching rule, the rule on hidden lines, and the treatment of shafts, bolts, and ribs.
- List and describe at least four types of sectional drawings, including full section, half section, offset section, and revolved section.
- Draw freehand sketches of a full section and a half section of simple machine parts, correctly applying section lining and cutting plane conventions.

Managing talk for learning: With the use of models, internet surfing, pictures, videos, charts and in mixed ability groupings assist learners to explain the principles and rules of sectional drawing, outline various types of sectional drawing, and present a comprehensive report in a whole class discussion. Activity-based learning Demonstrate the drawing of the various types of sections with the use of board illustrations and in freehand. Guide the learners to also draw the various sections in freehand in their sketch pads Assessment (2.3.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
