Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1 - Explain the kinetic theory of matter and apply it to distinguish between the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the main postulates of the kinetic theory of matter in their own words.
- Apply the kinetic theory to explain and compare the properties of solids, liquids and gases under the headings of volume, shape, compressibility, density, spacing of particles, motion of particles, force of attraction between particles and arrangement of particles.
- Draw labelled sketches to represent the arrangement of particles in solid, liquid and gaseous substances.
- Use the kinetic theory to explain the processes of melting, boiling, condensation, freezing, sublimation and evaporation.
- Predict and explain how changing temperature or pressure affects the behaviour of a substance using the kinetic theory.
