Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.5.2.LI.1 - Classify the two main types of timber
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define timber and distinguish it from the standing tree or raw log.
- Identify at least five Ghanaian and international wood species and classify each as either hardwood or softwood.
- Explain the key structural and physical differences between hardwoods and softwoods, including their cellular structure, density, and leaf-bearing characteristics.
- Compare and contrast the common uses of hardwoods and softwoods in the Ghanaian woodwork industry, giving at least three examples of each.
- Justify the choice of a specific timber type for a given woodwork product, using reasoning based on the properties of hardwoods and softwoods.
