Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.5.2.LI.2 - Outline the processing phases of timber in the woodwork industry
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- List, in the correct order, the five main processing phases of timber from felling of the tree to the final seasoned product.
- Describe what happens at each processing phase (felling, conversion, seasoning, machining, and preservation) using correct technical terms.
- Explain the difference between the two main methods of timber conversion: plain (through and through) sawing and quarter sawing.
- Compare the advantages and disadvantages of at least two conversion methods, giving reasons for choosing one method over another in a given situation.
- Outline at least two main methods of timber seasoning (air seasoning and kiln seasoning) and state one advantage of each method.
