Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.2.LI.1 - Select and use appropriate joints for a specific woodwork operation

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define and distinguish between angle (framing) joints and widening joints with reference to how and where each type is used in woodwork.
  • Classify at least eight common woodwork joints under the correct headings of angle joints or widening joints.
  • Select an appropriate joint for a given woodwork operation by considering factors such as strength, appearance, end use, and available tools.
  • Demonstrate correct procedure in marking out and assembling two joints: one angle joint and one widening joint, following safety rules and work ethics.
  • Justify their choice of joint for a specific artefact, explaining why alternative joints would be less suitable.

Group work/Collaborative Learning:
- Organise learners into mixed ability groups and assist them to co-operatively identify and passionately classify joints under the following;
1. Angle joints/Framing joints: E.g., Dovetail, Housing, Dowel, Rebate, Box-pin, Barefaced tongue and groove, Mortise and Tenon, Bridle, Mitre, Dowel, Halving.
2. Widening joints: Tongue and groove, Dowel
- Assist learners in mixed ability groups to co-operatively discuss the uses of the following joints:
1. Angle joint/Framing joint.
