SHS3 Art And Design Studio · Semester 1, Week 7
Material Classifications and Methods
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.2 - Use computer software applications to simulate the effects of art media
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least four computer software applications commonly used to simulate traditional art media and state one key feature of each.
- Analyse a given digital artwork and explain which software tools and filters were likely used to create specific effects (such as watercolour washes, charcoal strokes, or oil paint textures).
- Use a selected computer software application to produce a digital artwork that simulates the texture and appearance of a natural or manmade art medium studied in the previous week.
- Present their digital artwork to the class, explaining the software tools and techniques they used and how these relate to the traditional media simulated.
- Critique a peer’s digital artwork constructively, comparing how effectively the digital simulation mirrors the qualities of the original medium.

Problem-Based Learning: In mixed-ability groups, analyse selected art and design works to identify the computer software applications that were used in making them. Group Work/ Collaborative Learning: In groups, discuss how the computer software applications were used in making the art and design works. Project-Based Learning; Group work/ Collaborative Learning: In smaller groups, use ideas from the environment and the available computer software applications to create art and design works. Assessment (3.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
