SHS3 Art And Design Studio · Semester 1, Week 6

Material Classifications and Methods

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.1 - Research into recipes for making art media from natural and artificial sources.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Classify natural and artificial art materials found in their environment into wet and dry media, giving at least two examples of each.
  2. Research and document at least two traditional recipes for preparing dry art media (such as pigment powders or crayons) from locally available natural materials.
  3. Process gathered natural materials (clay, charcoal, leaves, seeds) into usable dry media following a step-by-step procedure, selecting appropriate binders.
  4. Explain the role of binders and colour-fast chemicals in media preparation, and state what happens when the wrong binder or no binder is used.
  5. Compare one natural and one manmade dry medium in terms of preparation process, cost, durability and final artistic effect.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Managing Talk for Learning: Through question and answers, classify natural and artificial materials found in the environment into wet and dry. E.g. assorted colours of clay, charcoal, shells, leaves, seeds, etc. Group Work/ Collaborative Learning/Problem-Based Learning: In mixed ability groups analyse how you will process the identified materials in the natural environment to create dry media for making art. Experiential Learning; Project-Based Learning: In convenient groups gather natural materials in your environment and process them to create dry media for making art. Try to select binders (wax, glue, etc), colour fast chemicals to prepare your media.

Assessment (3.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
