Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.1 - Examine the methods of representing relief on maps

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define relief and distinguish between relief features and other map features (such as roads, settlements, and vegetation).
  2. Identify and describe at least five methods of representing relief on maps, including hachures, spot heights, layer tinting, contours, and hill shading.
  3. Compare and contrast the advantages and limitations of at least three methods of relief representation.
  4. Construct a simple sketch map showing relief using contours and spot heights based on a given description of terrain.
  5. Justify, with reasons, the most appropriate method for representing relief in a given scenario, such as a flood-prone area or a mountain tourist region.

Collaborative learning: In small mixed-gender groups, discuss the various methods used to show relief features on a map. During the discussions, learners should listen to their peers' opinions and express disagreements in constructive ways.
