Manufacturing Tools and Equipment
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.3.1.LI.1 - Identify and classify cutting tools used in manufacturing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least eight cutting tools used in woodwork, metalwork and machining by name and appearance.
- Classify cutting tools according to their manufacturing operation (milling, boring, drilling, grinding, shaping, planing, broaching).
- Distinguish between single-point, double-point and multi-point cutting tools with appropriate examples.
- Present research findings on cutting tools to the class with clear communication and respect for peer feedback.
- Justify the choice of a cutting tool for a given manufacturing task based on the operation required.

Research-Based Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups research on cutting tools for woodwork, metalwork and machining, and present their results in class for feedback. Experiential Learning: Show learners cutting tools at the workshop and lead them to classify the cutting tools according to their use (e.g., milling, boring, drilling, grinding, shaping, planing, broaching etc.) and cutting-edge type such as (single-point cutting tool, double-point cutting tool and multi-point cutting tool). Teaching and Learning Materials: - Cutting tools - Textbook - Library resource - Educational tour to a local manufacturing industry Assessment (3.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
