SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 10

Manufacturing Processes

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.2 - Recognise and gain understanding of turning, drilling and milling operations using the center-lathe machine.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • State the working principles behind turning, drilling, and milling operations on a center-lathe machine.
  • Identify the machine parts and controls involved in performing each of the three operations.
  • Distinguish between the three operations by their tool movement, workpiece rotation, and the shape of the surface produced.
  • Explain, with examples, the types of workpieces or features each operation is best suited to produce.
  • Demonstrate safe and correct setup procedures for a simple turning operation on the center-lathe machine.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning:
- Show learners the parts and controls of the centre-lathe machine for performing turning, drilling and milling operations.
- Show learners videos of turning, drilling and milling operations as performed by a centre-lathe machine.
Collaborative Learning: Learners in pairs discuss and share the use of center-lathe machines to perform turning, drilling and milling operations to receive feedback.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Educational tour * Library resources
- * Internet access * Textbooks
- * Entre-lathe machine * Videos of centre-lathe machine performing turning
- Drilling and milling operations.
Assessment (3.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
