SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 12
Manufacturing Processes
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.2 - Perform a material removal process using a lathe machine.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for setting up the center-lathe machine for a facing operation on a mild steel workpiece.
- Perform a simple facing and straight turning operation on a mild steel workpiece using the center-lathe machine, following all safety protocols.
- Measure the diameter and length of the finished workpiece using a vernier caliper and verify that it meets the specified dimensions within tolerance.
- Justify the choice of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut for a given workpiece material and tool geometry during a class presentation.
- Evaluate the quality of their own and peers’ machined components against a rubric covering dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and safety compliance.

Experiential Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups manufacture a component using the center-lathe machine and present results to the class for feedback. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Surface grinder - Videos of grinding machines performing grinding operations - Centre-lathe machine Assessment (3.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
