SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 10
Manufacturing Processes
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.1 - Outline the importance of casting in manufacturing of engineering product.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define casting as a manufacturing process in their own words.
- List at least four reasons why casting is important in manufacturing engineering products.
- Explain how casting enables the production of complex shapes that are difficult to make by other methods.
- Describe at least two Ghanaian products or components that are made through casting.
- Justify why casting is a cost-effective method for mass production of metal parts.

Experiential Learning: Take learners on a tour to a foundry nearby to observe the casting of engineering products and share their observations with the class. Collaborative Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups make presentations on their observations at the foundry, making emphasis on the types of molds used for casting, melting of the metal to be used for the casting, pouring of the molten metal into the mold, and freezing of the molten metal in the mold. Talk for Learning: Lead learners to discuss the importance of casting in the manufacturing of engineering product. Let them add to what others say and summarise using mind maps. Teaching and Learning Materials: - * Educational tour to a foundry * Audio-visual facilities - * Sand casting equipment Assessment (2.3.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
