SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 11
Manufacturing Processes
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.2 - Explain the sand-casting process in manufacturing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- List the main steps of the sand-casting process in the correct sequence.
- Describe the function and importance of each major component in sand casting, including the pattern, mould, core, and sprue.
- Explain the role of the moulding sand and its key properties (permeability, refractoriness, and cohesiveness) in producing a quality casting.
- Analyse, using a flowchart or diagram, how a simple component such as a solid metal block is produced from start to finish using sand casting.
- Evaluate possible defects in sand castings (such as blowholes or sand inclusions) and suggest how each defect can be prevented.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Experiential Learning: Show learners a video of an industry-based sand-casting process and let learners, in think-pair-share groups, summarise the casting process and present their results to the class. Project-Based Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups cast simple components in the laboratory using sand casting. Teaching and Learning Materials: - * Educational tour to a foundry * Audio-visual facilities - * Sand casting equipment Assessment (2.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
