SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 14
Manufacturing Processes
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.2 - Apply screw, bolt and nut, and welding processes to assemble manufactured parts together.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Distinguish between non-permanent joints (screws, bolts, and nuts) and permanent joints (welding) by identifying at least three features of each.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for assembling two or more manufactured parts using screws, bolts, and nuts to form a non-permanent joint.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for joining manufactured parts using an available welding process to form a permanent joint.
- Justify the choice of a joining process (screw, bolt and nut, or welding) for a given manufactured product, giving at least two reasons for the choice.
- Evaluate the quality of assembled joints and recommend improvements based on safety and functional criteria.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Experiential Learning: - Learners in mixed-ability groups practice the joining of components to form nonpermanent joints using screws, bolts, and nuts. - Learners take turns in mixed-ability groups to join manufactured parts together using any available welding process. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Fasteners such as Screws, bolts, and nuts - Welding facilities Assessment (2.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
