SHS1 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 12

Manufacturing Processes

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.1 - Recognize and identify dies and presses used for sheet metal working operations.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the terms “die” and “press” in the context of sheet metal working, using their own words.
  2. Identify at least four common types of dies (blanking die, piercing die, bending die, drawing die) and state the specific sheet metal operation each one performs.
  3. Distinguish between the main types of presses (mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic) based on their power source, speed, and typical applications in the workshop.
  4. Match a given sheet metal operation (cutting, bending, drawing) to the correct die and press combination, and explain the choice in one or two sentences.
  5. Observe and describe the working principle of a die and press set-up, identifying the punch, die, and workpiece in a diagram or real workshop demonstration.

Manufacturing Processes (3.2)
Content standard
1.3.2.CS.2 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of standards, measurement and gauging in the manufacturing process. 1.3.2.LO.1 Apply the principles of bulk deformation and sheet metal working to roll, forge, cut, bend and draw metal sheets.
Indicator
1.3.2.LI.1 - Recognize and identify dies and presses used for sheet metal working operations.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 12 (Week 32 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.
