SHS1 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 10

Manufacturing Processes

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.2 - Discuss rolling, forging and extrusion as bulk deformation forming processes.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define bulk deformation and distinguish it from other metal forming processes.
  2. Describe the principles of rolling, forging and extrusion, including how each process applies compressive force to shape metal.
  3. Compare the three bulk deformation processes in terms of how they work, the shapes they produce and their typical applications.
  4. Identify common Ghanaian products made through rolling, forging and extrusion.
  5. Explain the advantages and limitations of each bulk deformation process.

Content standard
1.3.2.CS.1 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of bulk deformation and sheet metal working to roll, forge, cut, bend and draw metal sheets. 1.3.2.LO.1 Apply the principles of bulk deformation and sheet metal working to roll, forge, cut, bend and draw metal sheets.
Indicator
1.3.2.LI.2 - Discuss rolling, forging and extrusion as bulk deformation forming processes.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 10 (Week 30 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning: Take learners on an educational tour to local metal working industries to observe rolling, forging and extrusion as metal forming processes.
Research-Based Learning: Let learners in mixed-ability groups read on rolling, forging, and extrusion from the library or Internet, make presentations on these bulk deformation and forming processes to the class and receive feedback.
Project-Based Learning: Let learners in mixed ability groups perform a metal rolling operation at the workshop and present results in class for feedback. Encourage and tolerate comments from colleagues.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Visuals * Projectors * Textbooks
- * Library resources * Educational tours
- * Internet access * Audio visuals
Assessment (1.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
