Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.2 - Analyse and articulate stages of art criticism.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

List the sequential stages of art criticism (description, analysis, interpretation, and judgement) in the correct order and explain why the sequence matters.
Analyse a selected local artwork by moving through each stage of art criticism in order, using appropriate art vocabulary at each stage.
Articulate the difference between objective description and subjective judgement when critiquing an artwork.
Defend a personal judgement of an artwork using evidence gathered from the earlier stages of description, analysis, and interpretation.
Construct a simple chart or mind map showing the hierarchy and relationships among the stages of art criticism.

- In a class discussion, examine the appropriate sequence of events in the application of the various aspects of art criticism.
- Example: Aesthetic questioning- Formal Analysis-Historical analysis- Contextual Analysis, -Audience judgement-etc.

Experiential Learning
- In a class discussion, watch videos/photographs on the hierarchy of sequence and relationships of the various aspects of art criticism in a series of artworks.
- Consider gender, associations to themes and contextual use of art and design works, as well as use of examples of art and design works in the school and local community environment.
Managing Talk for Learning; Group Work/Collaborative Learning/Problem-Based Learning: In convenient groups, select popular public artwork and apply hierarchy of sequence and relationships of the different aspects of art criticism.
