Locomotor, Manipulative and Rhythmic Skills

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.1.13.1.16 - Roll (body) smoothly forward and backward (combination of forward and backward roll)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Demonstrate a smooth forward roll by tucking the chin, pushing off evenly with both feet, and keeping the body rounded throughout the movement.
  2. Perform a backward roll by pushing off with the hands, tucking the chin, and rolling over the back and shoulders to return to a standing or squatting position.
  3. Combine forward and backward rolls into a continuous sequence of two or more rolls without stopping.
  4. Identify and describe at least two safety rules for rolling activities (for example, keeping the head off the mat and rolling along the spine, not the neck).
  5. Adapt the rolling technique to their own body size and ability, adjusting speed and form as needed.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

After a warm-up, learners curve their bodies adequately, tuck their head, push- off evenly with both feet, take the body weight on the hands and arms. The head and body stay tucked in throughout the roll. Learners keep the front and top of the head from touching the mat. Learners roll back to their feet unaided at their own pace. Learners adapt forward roll technique base on their capabilities.
