Learning Objectives

Indicator: B3.1.6.1.7 - Strike (serve) a lightweight ball to a partner, using the underhand movement pattern.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Demonstrate the underhand striking movement pattern by swinging the striking arm from behind the body to contact a lightweight ball.
  2. Strike a lightweight ball to a partner standing about 6 metres away, using the correct underhand technique.
  3. Receive and return a struck ball to continue a rally with a partner for at least three consecutive hits.
  4. Apply the principles of accuracy, timing and coordination when striking the ball during partner practice.
  5. Show patience, teamwork and fair-play while working with a partner during the striking activity.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

After warm-ups as usual, put learners in pairs with a ball. Learners toss a ball and swing the arm from behind to strike the ball to a partner about 6m away. Learners strike the ball back to continue the rally. The process should continue when the ball drops. Supervise and give support to learners. End lesson with cool down.
