Learning Objectives

Indicator: B2.1.8.1.8 - Perform the overhand throw pattern.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Stand in the correct ready position, with feet shoulder width apart, before performing the overhand throw.
  2. Demonstrate the overhand throw pattern by stepping forward with the opposite leg while extending the throwing arm above the head.
  3. Release the ball at the correct moment, throwing it over the shoulder and past the head in a forward direction.
  4. Throw a ball using the overhand pattern towards a target with improved accuracy and control.
  5. Apply the overhand throw in a simple mini handball game, following basic rules of fair play and teamwork.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

After warm-ups pick up a ball and stand shoulder width apart. Extent the arm with the ball above the head as you step forward with the opposite leg. Swing the extended arm forward to throw the ball over the hand. Learners practice the skill and give them feedback. Allow learners to progress at their pace. Organise mini handball game for learners to experience the skill in real-life situation. End the lesson with cool down.
