By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Draw simple pictures of themselves and at least one peer.
  2. Use invented spelling to write one or two sentences about a drawing of themselves.
  3. Use invented spelling to write two or three sentences about a peer.
  4. Label three objects of their choice from their environment.
  5. Share their labelled drawings with a partner and respond to simple questions about their work.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Have a picture of a friend or anybody and write at least three lines about the person. Paste this in a corner of the class. Have a chart of various objects labelled (e.g. objects at home in, the environment etc.) and post them on the walls of the classroom.
- Have learners go round to observe the pictures.
- In groups, let learners share their observations.
- Ask learners to draw and label three objects of their choice.
- Have each learner choose and draw a peer and write a line or two about that person.
- Assist learners with spelling where necessary.
- Have learners share their work with their partners.
- Similarly, let learners draw pictures of themselves and write a sentence or two about them.
