Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.4.1.LI.3 - Compare and contrast the use of language in lyrical poetry to bring out its beauty (aesthetic value)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and name at least three stylistic devices used in a given lyrical poem and quote the exact lines where they appear.
- Compare the language choices of two lyrical poems on similar themes, stating at least two similarities and two differences in their use of diction, imagery, and sound devices.
- Explain how a specific language device (for example, metaphor, personification, or repetition) contributes to the beauty or emotional effect of a poem, using academic terms such as “aesthetic effect,” “evokes,” and “conveys.”
- Write a short paragraph (8 to 10 sentences) comparing the language of two poems, using comparative phrases such as “whereas,” “in contrast,” and “similarly.”
- Justify, orally or in writing, which of two poems they find more beautiful or pleasing and defend their choice with at least two pieces of textual evidence.
