SHS2 Literature In English · Semester 2, Week 11

Knowing Your Poetic Elements

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.1.LI.3 - Compare and contrast how different poets experiment with the different poetic devices.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three poetic devices (e.g., simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, repetition) in two different lyrical poems and state where they appear.
  2. Explain, in their own words, how a specific poetic device contributes to the meaning, structure, and mood of a poem.
  3. Use a compare and contrast table to record similarities and differences in how two poets use poetic devices.
  4. Write a short academic paragraph (4 to 6 sentences) that compares and contrasts the poets’ use of devices, using appropriate literary language.
  5. Present group findings to the class with respect, empathy, and sensitivity to others’ interpretations, building on each other’s ideas.

This lesson builds on the analysis of elements of style (form, diction, tone, mood, imagery) from Weeks 9 and 10. It prepares learners for deeper stylistic analysis in later lessons by focusing specifically on comparing poets’ experimentation with devices.
