Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.4.1.LI.1 - Explore the different forms of lyrical poems (Elegy, Ode, Sonnet, Haiku) using interesting level appropriate examples for pleasure.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Recall the four main forms of lyrical poetry studied in this lesson: elegy, ode, sonnet, and haiku, and state one defining feature of each.
- Identify a given poem as an elegy, ode, sonnet, or haiku by matching its features to the characteristics discussed in class.
- Explain the purpose or effect of each lyrical form (for example, why a poet would choose to write an elegy rather than an ode).
- Work collaboratively in groups to present information on one lyrical form, using appropriate literary language.
- Respond to a short lyrical poem with a personal expression of pleasure or appreciation, saying what they enjoyed and why.
