Learning Objectives

Indicator: K1.4.2.1.7 - Demonstrate their understanding of the concept of subtraction as separating and finding out how many is left.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Use the words “take away” and “how many is left” when talking about separating objects in a market play scene.
Separate a group of up to 5 objects and count how many remain after some are taken away.
Act out a simple buying and selling scene in a classroom market where the buyer asks for change and says how much is left.
Solve simple subtraction problems with numbers from 1 to 5 by drawing or using fingers, and say the answer aloud.
Work with a partner to check each other’s answers and share how they found how many was left.

Learners review the concept of addition and concentrate on Subtraction this week. Create a market scene where learners buy and sell different items in the community and use their understanding of the subtraction concept to buy with money and ask for a change. The buyer asks the seller a question "how much is left". Create different everyday situations and scaffold learners to subtract numbers. Let learners work in pairs and individually to solve problems in their exercise books.
