Learning Objectives

Indicator: K1.4.2.1.4 - Recognize the letter-sound learnt in the previous week in words

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Identify the /k/ sound when they hear it at the beginning of words related to people and occupations in the community.
  • Sort word cards into two groups: words that begin with the /k/ sound and words that do not.
  • Respond physically (hands on head or hands down) to show whether a spoken word contains the target /k/ sound.
  • Find and point to at least three objects or pictures in the classroom whose names begin with the /k/ sound.
  • Copy simple /k/ words into their exercise books with teacher support.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Show word cards out to students, have learners identify the letter sound /K/ [k] in the list of words. [Kwasi (Yes) mama (no), Kofi] etc. Learners put their hands on the head when there is the target letter-sound in the word, if not they put their hands down. In groups, learners do a treasure hunt for words beginning with the target word in the classroom. The group that finds more words with the target letter wins the game. Copy selected words on the board for learners write into their exercise books
