Knowing the Special Places in My Local Community

Learning Objectives
Indicator: K1.4.1.1.2 - Use visual information (illustrations) when reading.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Point to and name at least three special places shown in pictures from a big book about the community.
- Describe what they see in an illustration using a complete sentence (for example, “I see a clinic” or “The market has many people”).
- Use picture clues to guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word when the teacher shows the illustration.
- Demonstrate the meaning of a special place through actions and gestures during the “Pick and Act” game.
- Relate one picture from the book to a real place they have visited in their own community.

Using picture walk, allow go through the pictures from cover to cover as you flip the pages and let them talk extensively on what they see in the pictures Follow the before reading, during reading and after reading strategies as you read a big book on special places in the community Pause often and have the learners respond to the text by relating the information to their lives. Use visual information such as pictures to explain unfamiliar words. Have learners play a game of "Pick and Act" or "It takes the two" learners show by action what the meaning of the vocabulary is in pairs: one person picks the card, support the friend to show through gestures what place the gesture depict.
