SHS3 Physics · Semester 1, Week 9

Kinematics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.2 - Determine the velocity, acceleration and kinetic energy of a body performing SHM.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the equations for displacement, velocity and acceleration of a body performing simple harmonic motion.
  2. Calculate the velocity of a body at a given displacement from equilibrium, using the equation v = ω√(A² - x²).
  3. Calculate the maximum velocity and maximum acceleration of a body performing SHM using v_max = ωA and a_max = ω²A.
  4. Determine the kinetic energy of a body performing SHM at a given displacement using KE = ½mω²(A² - x²).
  5. Solve problems that combine these equations to analyse the motion of a body performing SHM.
