Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.3.LI.1 - Identify some games and sports where projectiles are seen.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a projectile and explain that projectile motion is two-dimensional motion occurring in a vertical plane.
- Identify at least five games or sports in which projectiles are seen, from Ghana and around the world.
- Use trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine) and Pythagoras’ theorem to resolve the initial velocity of a projectile into horizontal and vertical components.
- State the assumptions made when analysing projectile motion (negligible air resistance, constant gravitational acceleration, flat ground).
- Discuss the historical and contemporary contributions of individuals, including women and people with disabilities, to the study of projectile motion.

Collaborative learning: In mixed-ability groups of 3 to 5 let learners through brainstorming come out with examples of projectiles in some games and sports. - Let learners employ their knowledge in trigonometric ratios and Pythagoras's theorem to determine the components of the velocity of a projectile when the particle is fired at an angle to the horizontal. - Using think pair share let learners brainstorm and come out with factors that will affect the motion of the particle i.e., the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the motion. State any assumptions made. Investigate and discuss the historical and contemporary contributions of individuals, including women and individuals with disabilities, to the development of physics. Assessment (2.1.3.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall.
