By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Tell a short story about a picture in the Big Book using their own words
  • Identify at least one written symbol (word) connected to a picture in the Big Book
  • Retell the story that the teacher reads aloud, using the pictures as clues
  • Give one example of a word that rhymes with the word of the day
  • Point to pictures of healthy foods and vaccinations in the Big Book when asked

Have learners talk about the pictures in the book and ask them to make connections to the written symbols. Learners retell story read to. Using word of the day, encourage learners to give examples of words that contain the prominent sound in the word of the day e.g. mug: jug, hug, tug, etc.
