SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 7

Introduction to Vehicle Technology

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.6 - Describe vehicle wheels and tyres.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Identify and label the major parts of a vehicle wheel and a tyre using sketches, charts, or real objects.
  • Classify different types of wheels (disc, wire-spoked, and split-rim) and types of tyres (cross-ply, radial-ply, tubed, and tubeless) by their construction and appearance.
  • Explain the function of the wheel and tyre assembly, including how it supports the vehicle load, transmits driving and braking forces, and absorbs road shocks.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of radial-ply versus cross-ply tyres, and tubed versus tubeless tyres, using justifiable criteria.
  • Read and interpret the basic markings on a tyre sidewall (size, ply rating, and pressure rating) and state the correct tyre pressure for a given vehicle type.

Groupwork/collaborative learning Guide learners using relevant sketches, charts or real object to discuss the different types of wheels and tyres. Experiential learning : Learners visit a local repair workshop or a retail shop and observe critically the various types of vehicle wheels and tyres, tyre servicing and repair and present their report.

Assessment (2.1.2.AS.6). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
