JHS1 Computing · Term 3, Week 9

Introduction to Programming

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.4.1.1.2 - Demonstrate understanding in the use of data types (e.g. float, integer, string, char, etc.)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the term “data type” in their own words and explain why computers need to know the type of data they are working with.
  2. Identify and name the four main data types: integer, float, string, and char, giving at least two examples of each from everyday life.
  3. Classify given pieces of data (such as ages, prices, names, and letters) into the correct data type with at least 80% accuracy.
  4. Convert real-life information about themselves, their school, or their community into the correct programming data type.
  5. Explain what happens when the wrong data type is used for a value, using a simple example.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

1. Develop key questions around daily activities to identify the data type. Example: The first name of your best friend is written as a string data type.
