SHS1 Physics · Semester 1, Week 5
Introduction to Physics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.6 - Distinguish scalars from vectors (qualitative treatment)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a scalar quantity as a physical quantity that has magnitude only, and a vector quantity as a physical quantity that has both magnitude and direction.
- Give at least three examples of scalar quantities and three examples of vector quantities from everyday life and from physics.
- Classify the quantities velocity, acceleration, mass, length, time, weight, energy, power and force into scalars and vectors with 100% accuracy.
- Explain, in their own words, why direction is the key difference between scalars and vectors.
- Represent a vector quantity using an arrow diagram, showing both magnitude and direction.

Collaborative learning: Let learners find out the differences between scalars and vectors and let them in mixed-ability groups and categorise velocity, acceleration, mass, length, time, weight, energy, power and force into scalars and vectors. Encourage self-awareness and personal growth by fostering an environment where learners feel comfortable sharing their reflections and experiences. Assessment (1.1.1.AS.6). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Meter rule - Protractor - Electronic balance - Vernier calliper and - Micrometer screw gauge
