SHS1 Physics · Semester 1, Week 3
Introduction to Physics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Determine the dimensions of physical quantities (velocity, acceleration, mass, length, time, weight, energy, force).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the dimensions of the fundamental quantities: mass (M), length (L), and time (T).
- Express derived quantities such as velocity, acceleration, force, weight, pressure, work, energy, and density in terms of M, L, and T.
- Use dimensional analysis to check whether a given physics equation is dimensionally consistent.
- Deduce the SI unit of a derived quantity from its dimensions.
- Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to determine dimensions of quantities and present their reasoning clearly to the class.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Collaborative learning: - Let learners identify the relationship between quantities such as density, speed/velocity, acceleration, force, work, pressure, power and the basic quantities i. e. mass, length, and time. - Let learners replace the independent quantities i. e. mass, length, and time with their respective dimensions in physics texts. - Let learners deduce the units of measurement of the dependent quantities. Encourage the appreciation and valuing of the skills and abilities of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disabilities. Assessment (1.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Meter rule - Protractor - Electronic balance - Vernier calliper and - Micrometer screw gauge
