SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 3

Introduction to Engine Technology

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.5 - Describe types of lubrication systems, oil pumps and oil filters

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Sketch and label the three types of lubrication systems: mist, wet sump and dry sump lubrication.
  2. Explain the working principle of each lubrication system and state which engine type commonly uses each system.
  3. Describe the construction and operation of the gear-type, rotor-type and plunger-type oil pumps.
  4. Classify oil filters by type (full-flow, bypass, centrifugal and magnetic) and state the function and servicing requirements of each.
  5. Compare the mist, wet sump and dry sump systems in a table, identifying advantages and disadvantages of each.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work/collaborative learning:
- In a fair mixed group learners use appropriate sketches or chart to describe types of lubrication systems (mist, wet and dry sump lubrication).
- Assist learners in small groups to discuss the various oil pumps and filters.
Problem based Learning:
- Learners work independently or in groups to describe types of lubrication systems (mist, wet and dry sump lubrication) in relation to the various engines.
- Assist learners to brainstorm and discuss the various oil pumps and filters used on vehicles.

Assessment (2.1.1.AS.5). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
