I am a wonderful and Unique creation

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: K1.1.1.1.6 - Draw a beautiful picture of themselves and scribble freely underneath the picture paper.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Draw a simple picture of themselves, showing at least one body feature (such as eyes, hair, or arms) that makes them unique.
  2. Colour their self-portrait neatly using at least two different colours.
  3. Scribble freely underneath their drawing to represent their own writing.
  4. Talk about their drawing and their scribble with a friend sitting next to them.
  5. Respond to the teacher’s question “What did you draw?” by pointing to their picture and saying one or two words about it.

This lesson builds on the earlier lessons in Term 1, Week 1 where learners identified body parts (K1.1.1.1.1), sang action songs about body parts (K1.1.1.1.2), and used positive vocabulary related to the body (K1.1.1.1.4). This lesson focuses on creative expression through drawing and early writing behaviours. It stops short of creating sets of body parts with numbers, which is scheduled for Term 1, Week 2 (K1.1.1.1.7).

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Learners are asked to draw themselves, colour it nicely, after which they scribble freely underneath. Let them talk about what they have written with friends sitting next to them in the classroom. Ask learners what they have drawn and write them on the board. e.g. What did you draw? and write it on the board or under their drawing.
