History and Celebrations of Ghana
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: K2.5.1.1.4 - Identify the beginning and ending rhyming sounds in words, delete and replace the rhyming sounds to get another rhyming pair.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the ending rhyming sound in a pair of spoken syllables (e.g., “to” and “mo”) by saying both words and noticing the matching final sound.
- Identify the beginning sound in a spoken word (e.g., /s/ in “Sabala”) by saying the word slowly and clapping for the first sound they hear.
- Delete the ending vowel sound from a syllable and replace it with a new vowel sound to form a new rhyming pair (e.g., change /o/ in “to” and “mo” to /a/ to get “ta” and “ma”).
- Delete the beginning consonant sound from a word and replace it with a new consonant to form a new word (e.g., change /s/ in “Sabala” to /t/ to get “Tabala”).
- Play sound manipulation games with a partner, taking turns to delete and replace sounds while listening carefully to check if the new pair rhymes.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Give an example of two syllables that rhyme. e.g... [ to, mo.] Say the sound and have learners repeat the two words that have same rhyming ending. Repeat the two words slowly again, and have learners repeat after you. Ask them what they notice about the two words. Delete the ending vowel and replace with a new vowel sound to make a new syllable with a different rhyming pair. Replace the o with [a] and we get {ta and ma}
Do this for the beginning sound too. First delete the /s/ in [Sabala] and you get [abala], Replace /S/ with /t/ and you get [tabala}. Have learners manipulate the sound in a playful way.
