Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.3.LI.6 - Discuss the consequences of substance use

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Distinguish between short-term and long-term consequences of substance use, giving at least two examples of each for marijuana and alcohol.
  2. Explain how substance use affects the body systems, including the brain, heart, liver and lungs.
  3. Discuss the social consequences of substance use on family relationships, friendships and the wider community.
  4. Describe the economic and legal consequences of substance use, including loss of income, debt and legal penalties.
  5. Analyse how substance use disorders impact family dynamics and relationships, and propose ways to support affected individuals.

Activity-Based Learning: Learners work in pairs to create posters on various ways of managing the misuse of drugs.

Assessment (3.1.3.AS.6): Level 1: Level 2: Describe two short-term consequences and two long-term consequences of marijuana use. Level 3: Discuss the impact of substance use disorders on family and relationships.
